North-West coast of Mauritius

The corridor between Grand Baie and the capital. Closest base for the North Tour and for Port Louis itself — Caudan Waterfront, the craft market, Fort Adelaide, Champ de Mars. Sunsets are good here; the beach picture is mixed.

Sell it to

Guests with any interest in the island’s history and city life, shorter stays built around the North Tour, business-plus-leisure travellers.

Pairs with

North Tour, Château de Labourdonnais, Odysseo Oceanarium, the submarine.

Watch out

Beach quality is inconsistent along this stretch. One major international property here is largely rocky despite being beachfront — though there is a very good sandy public beach immediately nearby. Always check the specific property rather than the region.

Ocean’s Creek — a property worth re-examining

A newer hotel with a strong in-house activity programme. It is currently under-sold, and the reasons given are fair: no private beach (it sits on the lagoon side rather than open sand) and a standard room category that is mountain view rather than sea view. If the commercials improve it is a genuine option for a guest who cares more about things-to-do than about sand — but do not position it as a beach property.
