Hotels & beach reality

Which beachfront hotels are not actually on a beach.

“Beachfront” is not the same as “on a beach”

Several strong-selling properties in Mauritius sit directly on the water and still do not give the guest the sand they are imagining. Knowing which is which is the highest-value hotel knowledge on this island.

Properties refurbish and shorelines shift. Treat this as the starting position and confirm the specific property with supply before you quote.

How to use this without losing the sale

Do not hide a rocky beach — trade it. “This one is genuinely better value and you can walk to restaurants, but the beach in front is rocky. This other one has the sand, and costs more and puts you further from everything. Which matters more to you?” Guests accept trade-offs they chose. They do not accept surprises.

Inside the hotel

The boathouse

Complimentary watersports are non-motorised only — kayaking, pedal boat, snorkelling. The boathouse runs roughly 09:00 to 16:00, and guests must book slots there themselves in advance. It is not arranged through reception or through us.

Food

Buffets are a genuine selling point — even a four-star can put out fifty items at breakfast with live stations. Expect a continental buffet with two to three Indian vegetarian items daily. Most resorts have an Indian chef; a small number do not.

Evening entertainment

Every four- and five-star runs evening entertainment — sega dance, DJ night, traditional music, karaoke — but it rotates. Over six nights a guest sees several. Promise the variety, never a specific night.

The boathouse timing trap

Most guests are out on excursions between 09:00 and 16:00 every day — exactly when the boathouse is open. In practice they never use it. Tell them to walk to the boathouse and book their slots on the arrival day, while they are waiting for the room. That one instruction turns an unused inclusion into a highlight.

Why Mauritius hotels don’t bundle activities

Competitors sell packages stuffed with activities because in some destinations the resort provides them. In Mauritius the activities sit outside the resort — hotels offer only simple non-motorised watersports and evening entertainment. That is not a weakness; it means the activities are ours to sell, and they carry commission.
